Crowds throng 'Vikasothsava'

Cetallica’s song ‘Nothing else matters’ seemed to echo the feelings of students, who let their hair down and were soaked in the festive fervour of ‘Vikasothsava-2011’, the two-day annual cultural festival of Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering and Technology (VVIET).

While the crowd swayed to the music, ‘Moksh’ a rock band comprising students of VVIET and Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE) dished out music of heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Metallica and Eagles.

‘Mosh’ comprising Vishal Gowda, Vikyath Chandra and Ashwin ensured that the crowds hummed along to the tunes of ‘Nothing else matters’, ‘Hotel California’ and ‘Blood Brothers’.

War of DJs

Revving up moods was the ‘War of DJs’, which witnessed six DJs battling it out to churn out the best of music. As youngsters danced to the tunes, DJs Keith, Vikas, Hashim, Kaleem, Chirag and Sania set the pulse of the jam-packed audience racing.

Finally, it was DJ Chirag, who grabbed the first place, while Kaleem and Hashim were announced as the runners-up. The fashion show, which had an ethnic and gown round, and the sterling performances in the group dances left the audience awestruck.

However, a visitor to the fest, Swapna complained that the programmes were wrapped up quite early, Speaking to City Herald, Swapna mentioned that she was disappointed as the cultural programmes finished by 9 pm.

But she was all praise for the dance performance to a fusion by students of Basudev Somani College.

Contests

Apart from western music, the fest also witnessed many competitions such as Classical solo vocal, group song, mad ads, skits, one act play, mime, group dance, photography, cartooning, spot sketching, dumb charades, quiz, clay modelling, junkyard wars, light Indian vocal, English and Kannada Debates and Just A Minute (JAM) sessions.

Games

Students of various colleges from Shimoga, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Coorg, Bangalore, Mandya and Davangere participated in the event.

While the cultural activities stole the show during the evening, games including carrom and chess were also organised.

 ‘Echo Base’, a gaming competitions comprising Counter Strike, Need For Speed and DOTA was also held on the occasion.
