'Intl-tag for airport by Dec'

Mangalore Airport Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee Co-ordinator Thejomaya informed that there are all possibilities of the Mangalore Airport gaining the status of International Airport by this December.
 
Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, he said the Mangalore Airport would be full fledged within few months and might be announced as the International Airport. He said, a request letter was sent to Minister for Law and Justice Dr M Veerappa Moily seeking him to urge the Union Minister for Civil Aviation Vayalar Ravi to release Rs 20 crore for runway widening of Mangalore Airport. In response to the letter, Dr Veerappa Moily has written a letter to Vayalar Ravi asking him to approve the proposal of extending the present 8,000 feet runway by another 1,000 feet and has requested to grant the money. The widening of the runway would make it possible for Mangalore Airport to attain the status of International Airport, he informed.

Diamond jubilee

He said, as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations of Mangalore Airport, various activities have been planned by the Mangalore Airport Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee which will continue to take place till December 21, 2011.

The programmes which were kicked off on March 13, 2011 under the aegis of Canara Chambers of Commerce and Industries will continue for next seven months. As a part of the celebration, ‘Tulu Janapada Kreedotsava’ will be organised at Swaraj Maidan, Moodbidri, on May 29. The inaugural function of the sports meet will be presided over by Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade. Various folk sports like Lagori, Kutti-Donne, Hagga-Jaggata, Jubili, Kallata etc will be held for men and women under different categories.
