The middle-order batsman sustained the injury when he tumbled after his foot got stuck in the outfield while attempting to save a boundary. Writhing in pain, the 23-year-old limped off the field and took no further part in the game.

The youngster didn’t travel with the team to Jaipur for Wednesday’s game against the Rajasthan Royals and the RCB team management will take a call on replacing the right-hander after a final medical opinion on Thursday.

Pujara had also suffered a left-knee injury just ahead of the second edition of the IPL in South Africa during a warm-up game forcing him out of action for close to six months. Initial assessments are that the latest injury could be equally serious if not more.

Pujara, bought by the Bangalore franchise for a whopping $700,000 in the auction, didn’t quite match the expectations aggregating just 34 runs from three innings in seven matches. With Tillakaratne Dilshan departing to England after Wednesday’s game, Royal Challengers will be without the services of two batsmen they bought in the auction.
