JD(S) district president M Rajanna, who participated in the programme, urged the workers to address their problems through unity.
“It is imperative for you to form associations and work together to secure a future for your families,” he said.
He also urged them to obtain details about the benefits extended by the government and utilise them effectively.
Deputy Director of the Sericulture department, M V Chandrappa, advised the workers to stay away from bad habits and focus of their health.
K Nethrapal from the Labour department urged the porters to become members of the government’s pension scheme for the unorganised sector by paying Rs 100 a month.
“This will also ensure that your family gets financial assistance in case of your accidental death,” he said.
Taluk health officer Dr P Leela disseminated information about the various schemes extended by the Health department.
