Helmetless riding rises

In April, 7,248 cases were booked against those caught without wearing helmets, compared to 5,473 cases booked in the corresponding period last year. What’s worrying is while one had to pay with his life for not wearing the safety gadget, 11 others suffered injuries. Five persons were killed and 87 were injured in 65 cases. Among them, one was two-wheeler rider and 28 injured were travelling on two-wheelers. All the five who lost lives were men.

Pedestrians too are victims, with three killed and 12 injured in various cases.Other violations are - speed driving- 914 cases (365 in 2010), without DL-550 (332), drunken driving- 478 (271), reckless driving- 183 (175) and using cellphone- 181 (80) and other cases - 9,417 (5,473). A total of ` 25.39 lakh (` 14.24 lakh) was collected as spot fine, besides ` 3.85 lakh (` 2.85 lakh) imposed by court, said a release from police commissioner.
