Matsunaga, Sachdeva breeze into round of 16

Matsunaga, the only seeded player in action on the opening day, eased past India’s Fariz Mohammed 6-2, 6-1 in their first-round encounter.

The 25-year old seventh seed played an aggressive game to overpower his Indian rival in little over an hour. Fariz did have a few chances to break his rival in both sets but Matsunaga carried too much fire power.

Indian qualifier Ankit Sachdeva posted a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over USA’s Joel Kincaid in the first round. After dropping the first on a tie-breaker, the American put up very little resistance in the second set and caved in meekly.

In another close encounter, Saurbah Patil quelled Vishwanath Savadi’s challenge with a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win. Despite forcing a set point in the second, Savadi failed to drive home the advantage as the consistent Patil rallied to best him in the tie-breaker.

Vikram Reddy, Tejasvi Rao and P Vignesh were the other players to make it through to the next round.

In the doubles category, India’s Rohan Gajjar paired up with Russia’s Reshetnikov to score a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win over the Indian pair of Amrit Narasimhan and Sudanwa Sitaram.
