Competitive, overachieving, sleep-deprived super brains who don’t know how to let loose and have some fun. This is the popular stereotype that medical students are associated with. Dispelling this myth are the students from St John’s Medical College, Koramangala.

And what’s the buzz these days? Big Boy Fried Chicken or BBFC seems to be rocking. “BBFC is a complete imitation of KFC. It’s very popular in our hostel and it’s just five minutes from the hostel,” said Jarvis Perera. Seconding his opinion was Murtuza Ghiya, “It’s making people go crazy”.

Inexpensive seems to be the catch word. As one student, who didn’t wish to be named said, “We pay Rs 1.5 lakh as fees. So it has to be cheap. We are ‘broke’ medical students and ‘given how good our mess’ is, we eat dinner out a lot. The tea is the purest form of water. Our meals are like clay. We play with it a lot.”

So where do these impoverished lot head to. “Motte Dose from the carts. There is always Paramount. It’s like our second home. It’s like a mother and feeds us,” joked Murtuza. ‘The cheap Chinese places down the EG Pura Road are a big hit. We go there pretty often,” said Jarvis.

The other option, as Murtuza said, “Many of the hostelites, when they get homesick, go over to the homes of day-scholar friends every once in a while, just to get over the loneliness and to get some normal human food.” Unlike students in other colleges in the City, a lot of the students tend to stay on campus a lot more, perhaps it’s because, most of them are hostelites.

On campus, the music room, the rooftops and the football fields are of great importance to them.

“I’ve met some of the funniest and the most interesting people in all my 22 years of life here. We like to sit around and pull each other’s legs. I didn’t know there were so many ways in which you could make fun of somebody,” said Murtuza talking about what they enjoyed doing.

Some of the students let Metrolife in on their secret as well. “Well, when we head out to get some alcohol, we go to one of the many bars in Madivala. Regency and Invitations have always been popular joints,” they whispered.  PVR Cinemas made it to the list, of course.
