Stalin, who returned to Chennai along with his father and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi from Delhi after meeting his half sister Kanimozhi there, will now shoulder the party’s responsibility in the opposition benches in the state Assembly instead of taking a back seat as expected earlier.
The DMK has conceded the opposition party status to the fledgling DMDK led by actor-politician Vijayakant, which is the second largest party in the House.
While Stalin might have to take on Chief Minister J Jayalalitha directly on several issues in the Assembly, he would still be assisted by party senior and former DMK minister Durai Murugan, who was elected deputy leader of its legislative party at a meeting of DMK legislators here presided by Karunanidhi.
