Marthandappa Guddappa Balanayakara, 65, who was heavily in debt, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison.

A farmer from Gudanur, Balanayakara had borrowed up to Rs 8,000 from the Karnataka Gramin Vikas Bank at Gudiyahonnatti in 1985. Since the farmer failed to repay the loan, he accumulated an arrears of Rs 34,341 including interest.

The bank sent a notice to Balanayakara on Tuesday, asking him to repay the loan. Distraught, Balanayakara consumed poison the same night.

The matter came to light Wednesday morning, when his family members went to Balanayakara’s bedroom to wake him up, said the relatives.
