In a setback to DMK’s Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed their bail application in the 2G spectrum scam in view of the possibility that they might use their ''financial and political clout'' to hamper the probe and influence witnesses in the case.
Justice Ajit Bharihoke took into account several factors, including relationship of both Kanimozhi and Kumar with former telecom minister A Raja, and their financial relationship before rejecting their application.
“Considering the financial and political clout of the petitioners, a possibility cannot be ruled out that if the petitioners are freed at this stage, they would interfere with the investigation or try to influence the witnesses,” the court said.
Kanimozhi and Kumar have been in the Tihar jail here since May 20 after a special court dismissed their bail application on their appearance on summons.
Both were named accused in the CBI’s supplementary charge sheet filed on April 25.
