Heavy rain in DK, Udupi: Two killed

A man drowned when he accidentally fell into a stream while constructing a wooden foot bridge at Majikodi in Chembu village of Sullia.The deceased is Hoovappa alias Hoovaiah (48).  

In a separate accident, another person died when he slipped into an overflowing underground channel in Marne village of Ajakaru Gram Panchayat in the wee hours of Sunday.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Ajakaru police said the deceased has been identified as Shishupala Shetty (32). Though he was rescued immediately and was taken to Karkala hospital, he breathed his last in the hospital.

Heavy rain lashed Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Sunday. A lintel of an anganwadi centre which is under construction collapsed at Maniadka in Puttur. The Anganwadi centre is being constructed under Suvarna Grama yojane at a cost of Rs four lakh. The compound wall of another anganwadi centre at Kavu has also collapsed.  

Udupi district has recorded 34.2 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Karkala taluk had received highest of 37.4 mm rainfall followed by Kundapur taluk— 33 mm and Udupi taluk— 32.2 mm.
A tree which fell on an electricity pole at Kasanamakki disrupted the power supply in Hebri on Sunday.
