The long vacations have just ended and colleges across the City are all set to open their doors for students.

On Monday, the old stone building of St Joseph’s College of Arts and Science was abuzz with the footsteps of students who were all set to start the year.

These youngsters were seen catching up with old friends and making new ones on their way to their respective classes.

Along with the familiar faces of the seniors, one also saw a new batch of students with bright faces bearing joy, nervousness and excitement, making it evident that it was their first day in a professional college.

The first day holds a very important place in one’s memory and the new batch of Josephites were grasping in every minute of it.

The week before, the students were called for a two-day orientation programme where they were familiarised with the campus and were able to make new friends across various streams.

“Technically, this is our third day of college but our first day with seniors. So there is a certain amount of nervousness and anxiety on making new friends and how well the classes will proceed,” said Savitha, a first year science student.

The orientation helped a lot of students get over their initial jitters. Malvika, a first year arts student said she made a few friends over those two days.

“I had no clue how a degree college would be. There is a bit of excitement and nervousness but I am sure as the day proceeds, things will be a lot different,” said Varun, an arts student.

But that nervousness vanished for Sneha, a science student, when she got a chance to interact with her seniors who even gave her pointers on how to score well in her subjects.

“I don’t think there is any need to be scared of the seniors. Even before the classes began, some of them came over to ask us if we would like a freshers’ party. How cool is that?” asked Radhika, a first year arts student.

Getting into a college like St Joseph’s is a matter of pride for any student. And from the very first day itself, the freshers knew what it means to be a ‘Josephite’.

“One needs to have dedication and the spirit to take on challenges. That’s what I feel every Josephite has in this college,” said Syed, another first year science student.

There were many students who had come a long way to be a part of the college. Said Jackson and Sadananda, who had come from Manipur to be a part of the Joseph’s family, “The discipline and the kind of subjects offered by the college is what attracted us to it. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead filled with activities with a good grounding in studies.”

Kunga and Dolma, also from Manipur, said the first day is an exciting part of college life.
“The year has just begun and we have already made many friends. One also has to bear in mind that it’s a competitive world out there so preparations to perform well should start from the first day itself,” said Kunga.
