Clothes, sports equipment, jewellery, power tools and audio gear rank among the top items hoarded, the Daily Express reported.
The stuff is worth nearly 50 billion pounds, said the survey of 2,023 adults conducted by the firm LV=.
One in every 10 Britons said he or she hoards more than 1,000 pounds worth of stuff. Many people said they do not even know the value of the goods.
A spokeswoman for LV= said: "The majority of home insurance policies do not cover other people's belongings."
