She has become the role model for the rural folk, even as the urbanites would disbelievingly look at her. Yes, we are talking about the PUC topper in Arts this time.
Hailing from a humble rural background, the first rank holder in Second PUC examination, the results of which were announced on Saturday, S K Shruti has proved that hard work and determination to succeed will definitely pay.
A student of Arts in SUJM College in Harapanahalli, this is how the marks of Shruti reads-- Kannada 94, Sanskrit 92, History 92, Optional Kannada 98, Political Science 97 and Education 91, and total 564 (94 per cent).
Shruti who travelled daily not only in State transport but also in private buses and tempos to her college studied in difficult conditions. She is the daughter of Jyothappa and Manjamma of Jopilingapura village, which is at a distance of 17 km from Harapanahalli taluk.
Unlike most of the students in metros and big towns where PU students join the tuition brigade even as they step into the first year PUC, Shruti did not fall into the tuition trap.
She has only studied in Government schools where there are barely any facilities and thrown a challenge to those privileged students studying in fancy schools and convents.
Father of three children, Jyothappa has studied only up to fourth standard, while mother Nanjamma is an illiterate. Elder son Karibasavaraj is also no mean achiever as he is doing his engineering.
The family resides in a small mud house. The government sanctioned Bhagyajyothi scheme (where electricity is given free of cost to the poor) was her leading light which came to her rescue. She has no TV, radio, telephone or newspaper facility in her house.
All that the family owns is two acres of dry land a ox and another borrowed ox to till the land. Manjamma works as a coolie. In spite of such adverse conditions, the parents’ will power to give the best education to their children, should be an eye-opener for others more fortunate.
