On the one hand, the number of visitors to Sringeri is on rise. On the other hand, narrow road is creating problem. Traffic jam is a common scene at Kattebagilu.

Though the government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore to carry out concreting works, there are several rumours on the widening of the road. In a programme recently, MLA D N Jeevaraj had asked the people to decide whether they want road to be widened. If they give nod for widening, then the work on widening the road will be taken up on the following day itself. However, the widening of the road is a headache to the shop owners.

When Deccan Herald spoke to a shop owner Ganapathy Bhat, he said: “Four new parallel roads have been laid to Bharathi beedi. Inspite of this, there is pressure on Bharathi beedi. At the same time, Balika Primary School has encroached Subhash Beedi. Hence, the road can not be utilised. As a result, the house owners of Bharathi beedi will lose portion of their house.” The only solution to avoid traffic on Bharathi beedi is using parallel roads.

The vehicle owners should park their vehicles on Gandhi Maidan instead of Bharathi beedi. If the authorities have will power, then school could have been shifted. The parking system should be reformed.

Instead of widening the road, traffic should be set right, said Dr Niranjan Kumar.
Before widening the road, the vehicle owners should be disciplined and follow the traffic rules, said merchant S Ramananda.

Parallel to Bharathi Beedi, a road has been laid on the banks of river Thunga at Gandhi Maidan.

The road was laid at the cost of Rs 1.50 crore. The road will be completed by 2012, said Town Panchayat Member T K Parashara.
