32 government primary schools closed in Hassan

Less than five students in each school forces authorities to take drastic step
Last Updated 24 June 2011, 17:26 IST

The students in the schools which are closed are transfered to near by schools. Among them 11 schools are in Belur alone, 10 in Hassan, five in Holenarsipura, three each in Sakleshpur and Channarayapatna have been closed.

The government had decided to appoint two teachers for schools which had ten children and one teacher for those schools which had less than five students. But it decided to close these schools as there would be no classes, if the teacher went on leave.

Deputy director of Education department  A T Chamaraj said that the teachers of these schools have been transferred and the school building has been given to Gram panchayat. Chamaraj said that the private schools lure parents with flashy uniforms, ties and shoes. Parents fall for this bait and send their children to those schools thus decreasing the number in government schools. He said that teachers never want to work in villages.

Those in villages want to be transferred to towns and those working in towns want to go to the cities. No one is ready to work in the villages which has become a problem for the department. The Education department has decided to impart education in English from standard six. This year a total of 41 English medium schools have been opened.

Three schools in Arsikere, two in Alur, five in Hassan, five in Sakleshpur, 11 in Channarayapatna, six in Belur, five in Arkalgud and four in Holenarsipur have been opened. Chamaraj said that 32 students had already enrolled in the Vani Vilas School in Hassan.
Hassan has done exceedingly well in the eduction sector this academic year. The district has bagged several ranks in SSLC, PUC and CET examinations. The district, which stood 18th last year in the SSLC exams has moved up eight places to be placed ninth this year.
