Chidambaram will be the first Indian home minister to visit Russia in the last 15 years. Home Minister in the United-Front Government Indrajit Gupta had visited Russia way back in 1997.
Chidambaram will meet Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, Director-General of Federal Security Service Alexander Bortnikov and other senior officials.
Russian ministers are expected to inform Chidambaram on the police reforms in Russia.
which aims at dismantling the set up build during the Communist period.
Asked about the focus of Chidambaram’s visit, officials in the home ministry said, “disaster management” would be one of the main issues as Russians are known to have good expertise in the field.
