Call on Telangana likely by August 1

Cong leaders from region all set for 48-hour fast

Revealing that the decision could be imminent, a senior Congress leader said: “Telangana is an emotive and sensitive issue, the government is likely to take a decision on the issue before the monsoon session of Parliament”.

He said the government would make time-bound announcement on the creation of telangana, keeping the Hyderabad issue open.

The Centre would also set up a State Reorganising Committee to determine the boundaries of the new state.

On the resignation of MPs from the region, the leader said: “It is the prerogative of Speaker to take a decision on the issue; she can hang the issue for a long time”.

Over 100 MLAs and 15 MPs cutting across party lines tendered their resignations to the returning officers, putting pressure on the Centre to decide on creating a separate state.
Congress leaders decided to proceed with their hunger strikes, as the mass resignation failed to evoke a concrete response from the Union government .
