Sources in the BDA told Deccan Herald that the underpass will come up along with the 4.4 kilometre-long flyover linking Sajjan Rao Circle with Anil Kumble Circle on MG Road.
The length of the underpass would be around a kilometre and the cost would be between Rs 35 crore and Rs 50 crore.
“We are planning to include the proposed underpass with the flyover project linking Sajjan Rao Circle to Anil Kumble Circle on MG Road. We are in the process of preparing a detailed project report, which would be sent to the government for approval,” said a source in the BDA.
To ease traffic
The source said the aim of constructing the underpass is to ease traffic on Nrupathunga Road, which witnesses 8,000 passenger car units (PCU on this stretch during rush hour, which sometimes shoots up to 10,000 PCUs.
Heavy traffic
The heavy traffic from Nrupathunga Road to JC Road leads to severe traffic jams at Hudson Circle and Corporation Circle, sources said.
Presently, the underpass has not been included in the Request for Qualification (RFQ) for international bidders coming forward to construct the flyover, but the intention is to include it in the future.
The Nrupathunga Road was among the few roads in the City upholding the status of the Garden City with hundreds of old trees lined up on both sides of the road. It was so far spared from the development projects.
However, the fate of this lush green road hangs in balance with the Bangalore Development Authority coming up with the proposed underpass.
