Biradar, who was on his way after attending an emergency, “lost control” of the vehicle, as he was said to be under the influence of alcohol.

The incident occurred near MES Layout near Sigenahalli  between 7.30 and 8 pm, sources said, adding that Biradar sustained severe injuries and was hospitalised.

Peenya Traffic Police Inspector H T Sunil Kumar said a college student was eve-teasing near a playground here and that the police were informed about the same. Biradar, who was on patrol duty, was diverted to the spot.

On reaching the spot, Sunil Kumar claimed, Biradar found that the boy was being manhandled by the public and in a bid to save him from them, he drove off with the boy in the latter’s car. “Biradar was speeding to avoid any more problems and ran into the 11-year-old. The boy has fractured his limb,” Kumar said.

Refusing to admit that Biradar was drunk, the police said: “The college student was in an inebriated state. Biradar was not drunk, we have got the medical tests done.”

After Biradar hit the boy, bystanders assaulted the constable and the student.
It was only after the intervention of other police officers that the situation came under control.
