The incident comes barely a month after Sandeep, another toddler, was mauled to death in Yelahanka.

At 6 am on Wednesday morning, Renuka, daughter of a mason, had stepped out from her hut for relieving herself when the dogs pounced on her. When she screamed, Renuka’s parents woke up and saved the girl. By then, the dogs had injured her on the leg, thigh and abdomen.

Renuka was rushed to a nearby clinic for first aid, and later taken to Apollo Hospital on Bannerghatta Road for anti-rabies vaccination.

Renuka’s parents said usually Renuka would wake them up before stepping out.

“But today she did not wake us before going out of our shed,” cried Sharanamma. Renuka is one among the four children of Sharanamma and Basavaraj.

Migrant labourers from Yadgir, Basavaraj’s family is staying at a temporary shed. The family had moved to Bangalore three years ago. Renuka had come to the City a couple of years ago and joined a government school in Bilekahalli.

According to the local residents and the corporator, Roopa Ramesh, the locality has seen an increase in the number of stray dogs over the last few months.

Dr Pervez Ahmed Piran, Joint Director, BBMP (Animal Husbandry) said some of the dogs have been caught in the last few hours and Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme is in force in areas like Bilekahalli, which are newly added to the Palike jurisdiction.
