Doctors perform computer assisted knee replacement surgery in City

Knee replacement is a treatment procedure in which the damaged part of the knee joint of patient is replaced by implant. This is the best possible option for the patients suffering from Osteoarthritis. Computerised knee replacement surgery allows surgeons to operate with smaller incisions and greater precision.

The surgery was carried out by renowned orthopaedic surgeon from Switzerland Dr Christoph Saager and Dr Sudarshan Bhandary. Currently the facility of computerised system for knee replacement is only available in Bangalore, said Dr Bhandary. “The introduction of computerised navigation knee replacement surgery in Mangalore will help the patients opting for the replacement surgery. Instead of going to Bangalore, they can do it in Mangalore,” he said.

The surgery was conducted on 62-year-old Vasanthi Shetty.

The cost of the computerised knee replacement will be around 10 per sent increase from the normal surgery, said Dr Bhandary. The normal surgery costs nearly `1.25 lakh. The computerised technique will make the incisions accurate, said the equipment provider Brain Lab’s representative Dr Martin Bauer. “An approximate of 600 hospitals in world and 100 in India have this facility,” he said. The replaced implants will last for 15-20 years.
