The issue should not be taken to the streets, but it should be discussed and solved by constituting a board of scholars, insisted litterateur Dr H S Venkateshamoorthy.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of two-day Dasa Sahitya Sammelana organised by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat at Town Hall on Thursday. Putting forth his views on the debate over giving the credit to Kanaka Dasa for Purandara Dasa’s literatures, the litterateur said the debate should not be brought to streets. “The issue should not be discussed with rage. It is a sensitive matter and so should be debated with patience,” he said.

Commenting on the confusion prevailing with regard to Kanaka Dasa’s sect, Venkateshamoorthy said a deep study is required to find out if Kanaka Dasa supported Dwaitha or Vishishtadwaitha philosophy. Moreover Kanaka Dasa has produced great Keerthana’s in fornt of which the petty issues like his sect does not really matter, said the litterateur.

Appreciating the works of Purandara Dasa, he expressed his disappointment over the lack of quality appreciation and criticism works published with regard to Puranadara Dasa’s poems so far. “Despite Purandara Dasa being such a great poet who had influenced even the legend poet D R Bendre, no full-fledged appreciation or criticism off his works have taken place so far,” he said, adding that Dasa Sahitya were kept away until recently as the musicians claimed Dasa Sahitya were not musical lyrics and litterateurs claimed that they were not literature.

He praised Dasa Sahitya and said Dasa Sahityas stand apart for their simplicity and the relevance they have even to this day. “The issues discussed in Dasa poems are all time socially relevant. Dasas stressed on the values of life and how a man has to live his life with good character and dignity,” said Venkateshamoorthy.

Four conferences

In his presidential address, State Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Dr Nallur Prasad informed that the Parishat has taken up the task of organising conferences under four different categories. The Parishat had organised Pracheena Sahitya Samavesha at Shravanabelagola one and a half month back.

Dasa Sahitya Samavesha is held in Mangalore, while Vachana Sahitya will be organised at Koodala Sangama on August 20 and 21 and Adhunika Sahitya Samavesha will be organised in a short span, he said. With an objective to boost the relationship between the literature and cinema, a discussion programme will be held in the month of November, informed Dr Prasad.

Subrahmanya Mutt seer Vidyaprasanna Theertha released a monthly magazine on philosophy Harikathe- ‘Katha Keerthana’ on the occasion. Two literary meets on Dasa Sahitya were held on the day.

It is for the first time that Dasa Sahitya Sammelana is organised in the State.
