Swift, one of the most successful cars not only for Maruti but also in the whole industry, became a trend setter from the day one after it was first launched in 2005. Since then the company had increased its sales every year and in 2010-11 Maruti sold 1,41,000 Swifts -- both diesel and petrol.

While the company is yet to announce the specifications of the new Swift, sources in the car market say that car will be longer and wider than the present Swift to create more rooms inside. Its look has undergone a mafor face lift interms of the headlamps, front grill, rear view etc. The design of the new Swift is evolutionary. While it retains the character of the existing Swift, the design will be more dynamic, more energetic, more emotional and more energetic design. The car will come with a 5-speed gear box which is expected to be the same in the new one.

Sources say that engines of the new Swift will remain the same as 2010 version with some fine tuning. This means the petrol version will have a 1.2 liter K-series engine making 85 Bhp of power and peak torque of 113 Nm. The diesel engine would be the same 1.3 litre multijet (technology from from Fiat and also being used in Fiat and Tata cars) making 75 Bhp of peak power and 190 Nm of torque.

Fuel efficiency, which has been a hallmark of diesel Swift all these years -- thanks to the common rail direct injection (CRDi) technology, would also be equally good in the new swift. In top end, fully loaded version the company is expected to add many safety and user-friendly features like: anti-lock braking system, air bags in the front and back,
key-less entry, anti pinch power windows, etc.

Anticipating a rush for booking, Maruti Suzuki in a communication issued to its huge nationwide dealer network, has asked its dealers to inform the existing customers who have booked the car and are on waitlist for delivery about the option of upgrading  to the new model “at a higher price”. This effectively means that the new Swift, loaded with host of new features will be priced higher than existing Swift and along side existing customers, fresh customers of Swift can also book this car. Incidentally, even after six years, Swift still has a long list of customers awaiting delivery of the car. In its communication, Maruti has mentioned that the new model will come with many new features, a new VVT engine and better output for improved performance. “This means New Swift will offer much improved power to weight ratio and will be more efficient on fuel consumption to a litre of petrol or diesel, it mentioned.

Maruti Suzuki has sold over 6 lakh Swift since its lunch and is the only car in the premium hatch segment that has crossed this sales mark. The company claimed that though there are 11 models on offer in the category, Swift alone commands almost  one-fourth of the market.
