The police team comprising Sub-Inspector Sheelavant and constables visited Narayanpet on Tuesday to probe a theft of  jewellery.

During the interrogation of the jewellers, an argument ensued between the jewellers and Sheelavant.

Angered by repeated questions from the Karnataka police officers, the jewellers said: “Last month, the Karnataka police visited Narayanpet and interrogated us. Now you have arrived again. Your repeated interrogation is very upsetting.”

At this juncture, Sheelavant took out his revolver.

Protest

Enraged, the traders and the people who were witnesses to the episode, staged a protest and damaged the police jeep.

The jewellers and other traders downed their shutters and led a protest rally against the Karnataka police officers.

Intervention

The Narayanpet police intervened and tried to prevent the situation from going out of control. However, the Karnataka police officers countered the allegations, stating that it was a ploy to evade investigation by jewellers who would buy valuables from thieves.

A flourishing business

“Gold business is thriving in Narayanpet. Thieves find Narayanpet a safe haven for selling stolen jewellery. The investigation is based on accurate information. We visited the town to crack certain cases of jewellery theft that occurred in our police station limits and which provided a link to Narayanpet,” said Sheelavant.
