Global smartphone shipments to touch 1 billion

Global analytics firm Juniper Research has projected annual worldwide shipment of smartphones to reach 1 billion in 2016, compared to 302 million units in 2010.

The report titled ‘Smartphone Evolution Strategies: Premium, Standard and Economy Markets 2011-2016’, noted that economy models are the best opportunity for new players.

The fast growing Indian mobile handset market is witnessing intense competition among multinational and home grown players. Samsung, BlackBerry, HTC and Nokia are among the major players in the high-end segment.

Juniper noted the market for “standard smartphones (US$151- 399) and premium smartphones (US$ 400) and above) will remain robust.
