ISRO scientist held for dowry harassment

Following a complaint lodged by U S Soni, father of the deceased, Deepika, Hassan police have arrested Pramod Kumar, besides booking a case against five others.

Deepika had come to the town along with her husband and their two-year-old daughter recently to attend a programme organised by ISRO. Deepika had hung self at the hotel they were staying in. Initially, the police had surmised that Deepika may have taken the extreme step owing to depression.

However, on Friday, Deepika’s parents U S Soni and Snehalatha Soni and brother Shashank Soni — who arrived in the town — rubbished the suicide theory and alleged that it was a case of murder.

Soni who is a police inspector at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh alleged that his daughter was not suffering from any depression, but was being given a dosage of pills without any prescription by her husband.

Pramod Kumar was allegedly given Rs 7 lakh in cash, besides 100 gram gold valuables at the time of marriage. Subsequently, he was also given Rs 2.5 lakh to buy a car.

Following a complaint, police have booked the case against Pramod, his father Neelakanta, mother Shanthidevi, sister Pinky, her husband Sanjeev and another sister Rinky.
