Cyber lab launched in M'lore

It will enable in law enforcement and legal security, says Acharya

“There is an organised underworld targeting netizens today. When terrorists are using emails to carry on their nefarious activities on one hand, identity theft and cyber crimes are high on another, said State Minister for Higher Education Dr V S Acharya after the launch of KEONICS Cyber Lab at Kodialbail.

He also stressed that people should cross check the information they get on internet and added that KEONICS will enable in law enforcement, legal security and will train the future generation to tackle with phishing and other crimes.

KEONICS in Mangalore is the first cyber lab to be launched in the State and is an initiative incubated and ideated by Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited with the support of Department of IT, BT and S and T, Karnataka Government.

Speaking after inaugurating KEONICS, District-In-Charge Minister Krishna J Palemar said that with the increase of crime in e-world, the institution will play a major role in good e-governance and curbing crime. The e-world should not be limited to cities but also should reach the people from the rural areas, he said.

“During 1850s the information used to double once in 30 years, however, now with increased technology, information is being doubled once in six weeks,” said Department of IT, BT and S and T Principal Secretary M N Vidyashankar.

In 2010, as many as 66 cases related to cyber crime were reported. This year till date, 22 cases are reported of which 4 are pending and will be solved soon, he said. He also informed that most of the cyber crimes take place in the month of December as most of the IT companies remain closed for Christmas. In India, about 40 per cent of the total business is dependent on banking and financial services. Hence, it is very important to be alert, he said.

“Keonics Cyber Lab will be at the forefront of the State’s preparedness in tackling cyber crime proactively rather than retrospectively through training, investigative support and R and D support to various law enforcing agencies,” said Vidhyashankar and added that Cyber Lab’s primary focus is on Law Enforcement Cell, Judiciary Department, Government Department, Banking Sector, Academia and Netizens.

Presiding over the progaramme, MLA U T Khader spoke on the difficulties he faced when his facebook account was hacked and expressed his happiness that one can now feel secure with KEONICS.

Training programmes

KEONICS cyber lab will organise different types of certification courses. A full fledged course will be of 1 week, a crash course will be of 3- day duration and a workshop may take a maximum of two days. Mandamus Info consultants, a leading company in cyber fraud will be associated with KEONICS for achieving objectives.

Adhaar in DK

The tender for DK for Adhaar scheme will be called on Monday, said M N Vidyashankar. Adhaar, started as a pilot project in Mysore and Tumkur as almost completed 96 per cent of enumeration. There are hopes to start enumeration on a mass scale by August 15 in Dakshina Kannada, he said.

Science centres

To benefit students from rural areas, 10 sub science centers will be started in Kodagu, Raichur, Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, Hassan, Haveri, Tumkur, Bidar, Belgaum and Bellary.

The State government will allot Rs 2.60 croes for each of these centers, said District-In-Charge Minister Krishna J Palemar on the occasion of the launch.

Apart from these, three regional science centers will come up at Dharwad, Mangalore and Mysore and Rs 8.50 crores will be allotted for these, he informed.
