<p>Several small group of miscreants is believed to have involved in extortion of students threatening and blackmailing them on various counts. <br /><br />An arrest of one such group involved in similar offence and the revelation from students – that several other groups are also active across city colleges, have left the police in shock and disbelief. Police are making efforts to nip the menace in bud and prevent it from taking tragic proportions – a lesson drawn from the case of Sudhindra and Vignesh, final year BBM students of Mahajana college who were abducted from their college and murdered for want of lakhs of rupees in ransom.<br /><br />A police complaint from a victim through MLC Marithibbe Gowda have landed six youth, including two students (juvenile), in jail. <br /><br />Those arrested are: Sanju Gowda, Murali, Vinod Kumar, Puneeth, Keerthi Kumar and Raju. <br /><br />The police rounded them near Institution of Engineers outside Maharaja pre-university college – a place which the miscreant gang had made their regular hang out. <br /><br />The police are on the look out for other four accomplice who were part of Sanju Gowda and team. The group is said to have extorted haftha - forcing students to give money on weekly basis. They would target students from elite families by way of provoking a brawl for no reason or blackmailing them of disclosing their friendly relationship with girls and other activities to parents. The gang would also force the students to give their bikes and go on a ride around city and in outskirts. <br /><br />Institutions aware <br />Surprisingly, Marithibbe Gowda claimed, the educational institutions were well aware of the developments happening around their campus. <br /><br />These gangs are involved in extorting seats from the management. “The groups demand up to Rs 50,000 from students and their parents for a seat in reputed schools and colleges. They also help students get their exam hall tickets when they have landed in soup due to low attendance on a payment between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000,” he said. <br />“Police should take the issue seriously and act against such groups prevalent across city colleges. <br /><br />Though the institutions know about the menace, they are acting blind to it,” MLC said. <br /><br />Cops to act tough<br />Deputy Commissioner of Police (law and order) Basavaraj Malagatti has taken the issue very seriously and asked the educational institutions to cooperate in curbing the menace. “No sooner there was a complaint we acted tough and arrested six youth. We are looking for four others. They have all been included under the list of rowdy sheeters,” he told media persons here. <br /><br />Malagatti also asked the students and managements of the educational institutions to bring to their notice any such groups active in and around their campus. “We would act immediately,” he added. <br /> </p>
