PU topper's gift for Mothers Day

Street vendor's daughter fares well in Science stream

The daughter of a street vendor Geetha, who sells clothes in one of the bustling markets of the city, Harsha has secured 96.16 per cent in the second PU examinations and is among the toppers in the science stream. The student of Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain PU College was also financially aided by an organisation called ‘Prerana’, that supports the education of underprivileged girls.

Harsha credits her mother as the ‘sole reason’ for her success. “She is my inspiration, my role model and my biggest motivation. This success has been possible only because I have inherited her competitive nature and her never-give-up attitude,” she says.  She laughs and adds “Even when I slept off, my mother used to wake me up and make me study.”

Her competitive nature is evident when the spirited 17-year- old insists that she scored 96.16 per cent and not merely 96 per cent. She adds that she expected even more and her marks in Sanskit and Computer Science were not upto her expectations. Her marks read 90 in Sanskrit, 93 in English, 100 in Physics, 99 in Chemistry, 95 in Computer Science and a cool 100 in Maths. Harsha was also a topper in SSLC and had scored 98 per cent. But despite this competitive nature, she insists that her method was not about pouring over books for hours.

“I used to study the concepts that were taught on the same day itself and that helped me more than anything,” Harsha says.

Engineering degree

She has written CET and wants to pursue an engineering degree in electronics. “Electronics is evergreen. Even in these times of recession, there is scope for it,” she reckons.

Finally, Harsha has a word for everybody that has empowered her to attain this feat.   “Prerana has been of enormous support. They have been the backbone for my education. Not just for me but for so many of my friends who have all scored high marks in PUC. I also want  to thank all my teachers over the years for their support and belief in me,” she says.
