Extreme reactions at 'jinxed' town over homa

Confusion prevailed for sometime at the premises as there was stir against the homa and counter stir supporting it.

The progressive organisations have condemned the state government for conducting such homas encouraging superstitions among the people. Criticising chief minister D V Sadanandagowda for not visiting the city out of fear of losing power, giving in to blind beliefs, the members of the organisations staged a protest. They also burnt the effigies of district-incharge minister Renukacharya and Energy minister Shobha Karandlaje.

Meanwhile, members of pro-Kannada organisations and members of city municipal council staged a counter stir supporting the homa. They stressed that the homa is being conducted for the well being of the people of the district and for profitable yield, and it should not be disturbed.

This led to chaotic situation and police who rushed to the spot brought the situation under control.

Maha homa

The Maha homa started at the temple premises on Sunday evening under the guidance of a Kerala priest Ravi Namboodiri.

About 35 astrologers from Dakshina Kannada and Bangalore will participate in the homa which will be continued up to September 7.

The puja rituals began after the rahukala that was between 4.30 pm and 6 pm. Ganapathi homa, Sudarshana yaga, trikala puja, parayana and others were also performed.
