At a function at the Vidhan Soudha, where Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda felicitated Vikas and presented him with Rs 5 lakhs for his bronze medal effort in the Asian Games 2010 in China, the CM agreed to take care of all his training expenses.

“The Department of Youth Services and Sports has set apart a budget of 5 crore for the 2012 Olympic Games,” IR Perumal, principal secretary of DYSS, said.

“Therefore we are going to look after Vikas for the rest of the period leading upto London. The CM just sanctioned the initial amount today for Vikas’ training.

“We hope that with this encouragement, he will come back with a medal and make us all proud,” he added.

Vikas, who had made the finals of the athletics World Championships in Daegu this month, said he was happy to finally get some recognition and hoped to kick on from his recent good show.

“It’s nice that they have decided to help me out. Any encouragement is welcome,” he said.
“I will be going back to the US in a couple of days and will start preparations for the London Olympics soon after,” he added.

The Kannada Rajya Prashasthi also feted the 6’9 discus thrower, presenting him Rs 1 lakh and a gold medal.

Meanwhile, sprinter HM Jyothi, an Ekalayva awardee, requested the CM to grant her a site which had been pending for a while. Gowda said the discretionary powers for the purpose had been taken away from the chief minister and the matter was in court. Once a verdict comes, he would look into the issue.
