Yaravas demand primitive tribe status

Protest planned on Sept 19 pressing for better opportunity for youth of community

The procession planned as a part of the protest will commence at 10 am at Ganapathy temple premises, said Yarava Jananga Okkuta Members in a press release.

The procession will be flagged off by DTP former member PT Soma. The procession after passing through important roads in the city will culminate at Revenue Inspector’s office where the members will stage an indefinite strike. They will hand over a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner through the Revenue Inspector keeping forth their various demands.

Release from the Okkuta has urged the Paniyavara and Parijayavara communities dwelling mainly in villages like Kottageri, Nittoor, Karmadu Jagale, Sullugodu, Ponnamppasanthe and Besaguru to take part in the protest in large numbers and contribute to the success of the programme.

Other demands

The Okkuta has demanded direct appointment of Yarava youth to backlog posts in the district. Better opportunities for Yarava families which were displaced during nationalisation of forest in 1970, An action plan for welfare of the Yaravas after conducting survey of the community and extension of facilities to Yaravas as provided to the primitive tribes are some of the other demands.
