Speaking to media persons on Thursday, Shetty said that it was a regular practice in their College to ask the students to bring their parents to the college if the students violate the college rules. “Similarly when the entire II B.Com class bunked the class and went for cultural programme practise, we asked the students to apologise and meanwhile asked two of the students to bring their parents to the College, for they were the one who encouraged their classmates to bunk the class,” he said.

He informed that Shloka Shetty (the victim) initially agreed to bring her mother and when the Principal himself called her mother asking her to come to the College, she too had agreed. But the next day Shloka failed to bring her mother to the College and requested the Principal to spare her from the punishment as it would cause embarrassment. When the Principal disagreed, she tried to commit suicide by consuming phenyl.

The Principal said that according to the college rules, the students were not supposed to bunk the classes during class hours. If at all the student was bunking any class, he/she had to register it in a book, citing the reason for bunking. As the II B.Com students had violated the rule, disciplinary action was taken on two students, he defended.

Meanwhile, he said that the College administration was funding all the medical expenses of Shloka Shetty who is now in a city based private hospital and is recovering. He said no action will be taken against the students who damaged the college infrastructure, following Shloka’s suicide attempt.
