The construction of humps is not only illegal but purely unscientific. The BBMP and the traffic police, who are caught in the blame game, are completely oblivious to the plight of motorists. When questioned about the presence of unauthorised road humps, Corporator of Gandhinagar Ward S Nataraj claimed that they were erected in response to public demand.

A few months ago, when the road stretch was asphalted, there were only two humps. However, after the road was asphalted, six road humps have come up.

“Riding a two-wheeler on Risaldar Street to reach Seshadripuram is a traumatic experience. In addition to negotiating with traffic, the number of humps, its height and the short distance between them accentuates the problem. The six humps are so high that motorists experience severe pressure on their backs,” explained a motorist.

Motorists losing balance, sustaining injuries is a common feature on the stretch.

Risaldar Road is the only option to reach Seshadripuram, especially to those travelling from Rajiv Gandhi Circle, as all the other parallel roads in the area are one-ways, the commuters added. However, the residents have a different tale to tell.

“ The road humps have been created to ensure pedestrian safety in the area. The stretch witnessed a number of accidents in the past due to lack of sufficient road humps. Thus, after consultation with Corporator S Nataraj, we persuaded him to allow for the construction of road humps,” elaborated a few residents.

Police version

In the past two years the traffic police department has not recommended the construction of any road humps in the City.  The traffic police only painted white stripes on the humps to draw the attention of motorists to it, said a senior traffic police officer.

In response Gandhinagar Corporator S Nataraj said: “I don’t think construction of road humps amounts to illegality, as it is a matter of pedestrian safety. However, on receiving complaints I shall take steps to remove the humps.”
