Firecracker blast causes panic in Bangalore

"Firecrackers kept in a dustbin got ignited, accidentally leading to explosion sounds and causing panic in the busy market area near Minerva circle around 8 p.m. The area has been cordoned off and checked for any explosive material," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Pronob Mohanty told reporters.

In the aftermath of the terror blast at the Delhi High Court Wednesday, the loud explosion made the public run helter-skelter and brought the heavy vehicular traffic at the Minerva junction to standstill.

The situation was soon brought under control. “The situation is under control. There is no cause for panic. We request the public not to spread rumours. Firecrackers kept in the dustbin exploded and no bomb material was found in the bin,” Mohanty said.

Even as the bomb detection squad combed the area for explosive material, one platoon each of the Rapid Action Force and the Karnataka State Reserve Police were deployed to secure the area and maintain a vigil.

Some processions carrying Hindu god Ganesha for immersion on the ninth day of the 10-day festival were diverted from the route to prevent traffic blockade and disperse the people from crowding the area.

In view of the city being put on high alert following the Delhi blast, police have registered a case of unidentified explosion and launched an investigation to ascertain who had placed the fire crackers in the bin and when.

“It’s too early to say anything about the incident. As investigation is on, no suspects have been identified. We will try to find out who could be behind the mischief and if any motive behind the act,” Mohanty added.
