B'lore is disabled-friendly, says Bhardwaj

Inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the Association of the Mentally Challenged (AMC) here on Friday, the governor said that special children have unique inner strength.
AMC is the first institution in Karnataka established in 1960 to care for the intellectually-challenged persons. It is also the second national-level institution serving the mentally challenged individuals in the country. During the last 50 years 1,232 children have benefited from the services of AMC.  

Special education for the mentally challenged is provided at Akruti where they are taught to be independent individuals in their everyday activities. Vocational training at Pragati provides training in carpentry, weaving, candle making, sundry crafts, handmade paper, gardening, operating photocopying machine etc.  The sheltered workshop at Sanskriti was also started to  provide day care to these children.  The centre is also empowering parents through Samruddhi programmes where life-long support is provided to the families of the mentally challenged.  Sudha V Reddy, former MP and found member of AMC, Meera Ramchand, secretary and K Jairaj, president of AMC were present on the occasion.

Robi’s Garden

As part of the fund raiser, Bangalore Little Theatre organised a play, ‘Robi’s Garden’ as a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his 150th birth anniversary.   ‘Robi’s Garden’ is a collage, drawing from Tagore’s wide range of prose, riddle plays, autobiographical notes, short stories and letters written to his grand-daughter. 

The play had 18 children in the age group of 7-11 years from various schools across the City.  The play is directed by Priyalakshmi Rao and written by Vijay Padaki.   The show will be on at Guru Nanak Bhavan from September 10 to 13 at 11 am, 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm and at MLR Convention Centre, JP Nagar on September 15 and 16 with the same show timings.
