A team of police personnel attached to Murbad police station had set out to raid a gambling dean in village Koravale at about 1.30 am on Friday.

After reaching Koravale, police spotted some villagers gambling. Police rounded up the group and were directing them to the police jeep parked at some distance.

One of the policemen, who had gone to fetch the jeep, was attacked with sharp weapons and sticks by the villagers. The Constable, Nitin Pundalik Vishe (26), was badly wounded, and admitted to a local hospital, they said.

The police team managed to nab one of the attackers, Shivaji Bhande, while the others escaped from the scene, they said.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of IPC against the mob which comprised about 20 villagers, and launched a manhunt for other attackers.
