HC allows plea on minimum wage

Last Updated 24 September 2011, 19:12 IST

The Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Vikramjit Sen and Justice A S Bopanna quashed Section 6(1) of the MGNREG Act, which fixes a minimum wage of Rs 82 for agricultural workers.

According to the petitioners, Rs 82 was far less compared to the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, which pay over Rs 100 to those employed under the scheme.

The State, in its submission, stated it had decided to pay the minimum wages of Rs 125 to the workers. However, it had not been implemented due to delay in release of funds from the Centre.

The court has directed the Centre to pay the difference in wages of Rs 119.42 to those who worked during the period when Rs 82 was the wage fixed.
