Athlete commits suicide

The dead has been identified as Prithvi S P (17), a II PUC student. A native of Ampari in Kundapur taluk, Prithvi was adopted by the Brahmavar Sports Club. She was provided with hostel facilities in the college.

Prithvi, who returned to the hostel on Tuesday after participating at the divisional-level sports meet in Mandya, spoke to her friends and family members. The police have recovered a diary from her room and are hopeful that it may reveal the reason for her suicide.

It is suspected that a local boy who was troubling her might have forced her to take the extreme step. Inability to handle the pressure of excelling in sports is also being considered as one of the probable reasons for her suicide.

Prithvi had bagged the second place in javeline throw and the third place at the recently concluded Dasara sports meet at Mandya.

An upcoming athlete, she had won a silver medal at the national-level athletic championship in Bhopal.

She had also won the first place in heptathlon at the State-level athletic championship held in Bangalore.
