Ride Metro from Oct 20

Speaking to reporters after his meeting with Union Urban Development minister Kamal Nath in Delhi, Gowda said:“Nath has agreed to inaugurate the Metro on October 20 and he will be accompanied by Railway Minister Dineshbhai Trivedi among others.”

Gowda had told Deccan Herald that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had turned down the State’s invitation to inaugurate the project due to “prior engagements.”

BMRCL spokesperson BLY Chavan said: “Now that the date has been announced, we will be working out the schedule of operating the trains and also the frequency among other things.”

The five coaches which were being run between 8 am-8 pm during service trials are most likely to be operated from early morning till late in the night.

“The timings will mostly be like Delhi Metro, perhaps with the difference of an hour at the beginning and ending of service every day,” a source said.

Before obtaining the final clearance from Commissioner for Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) DK Singh on September 23, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had missed several deadlines to open the reach commercially.

Reach-1 was originally scheduled to be opened in March 2010 but owing to the revision of schedules in 2008, the opening was fixed for December 2010.

The Corporation did not meet even that deadline as there was an abnormal delay in completing construction of the viaduct on CMH Road. It had to change the contractor.

Following this, the Centre extended the Metro Railway (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002 to cities, including Bangalore, leading to the Ministry of Railways becoming the nodal authority instead of Ministry of Urban Development.

Also, this saw fresh rules being framed under the Act as the old rules were framed under the Mysore Tramways Act, causing delay, contributing to the December 2010 miss.

This saw a fresh deadline –– April 4 (Ugadi) ––being set by former chief minister BSYeddyurappa. Failure in obtaining the required certification saw that deadline go by.
