Speaking at an event here, Gowda said Dr Tilak’s resignation was not a fallout of Yeddyurappa’s judicial custody. “These are two different issues and they are not connected,” he emphasised.

Dr Tilak had applied for voluntary retirement on October 15.

He told Deccan Herald that Tilak had handled enough “VIP issues” previously and he now wished to be free from any situation that would be difficult for him to handle.

To retire in four months

Medical Education principal secretary Gopalkrishne Gowda confirmed Dr Tilak had submitted his VRS application on October 15, the day Yeddyurappa was denied bail and sent to jail by the Special Lokayukta Court. Dr Tilak is just four months shy of retirement.
Earlier, he had earned the wrath of the special court judge for making contradictory statements regarding former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu’s treatment at Victoria Hospital.

The court had to call in Dr R M Kantaraj, the resident medical officer, to get the actual health status of Naidu.

Director

Tilak, a cosmetic surgeon, was appointed Victoria Hospital’s medical superintendent in 2008. He has now been appointed director of Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Hospital.

The principal secretary said since the institute was an autonomous body, a retired doctor could be appointed director on contract.

“The appointment is for a period of five years — till 65 years of age,” Gowda said.
Medical Education Minister S A Ramdas said Dr Tilak had submitted his VRS application on October 12 and it was accepted on October 17.

“I will decide on a new medical superintendent for the Victorial Hospital on Thursday,” he added.
