Viveknagar police on Wednesday arrested Subramani, 35, a resident of Moodalpalya in Nagarbhavi, and seized fake seals, medical certificates, birth and death certificates and a green pen.

According to police, Subramani, a Group D employee at the Kasturinagar BBMP office, visited various departments carrying files, and won the trust of his higher-ups. To make a fast buck, he stole seals, death and birth certificates from his office and prepared fake documents forging signatures.

Fake seal

Prashanth, a resident of Viveknagar, approached the Kasturinagar BBMP office to obtain the death certificate of his brother. However, when he failed to get it immediately, he pressured Subramani after a few days to move the application quickly and issue the certificate. Subramani, police said, forged the signature of his higher-ups, used a fake seal and issued Prashanth a fake death certificate.

Prashanth submitted it to the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) to claim his brother’s dues. The LIC staff sent the death certificate to the Kasturinagar BBMP office for verification. The Palike staff wrote back to LIC stating it was a fake death certificate. The LIC higher-ups lodged a complaint against Prashanth.

When police questioned Prashanth, he informed them that Subramani had issued the certificate. Police checked the death certificate and found it had a seal of 2009. Police took Subramani into custody. During interrogation, he admitted to issuing the fake death certificate. He also told the police he had issued four false certificates in the past one year.
