Sources said Illiyas Ahmad of HBR Layout was taken into custody on the evening of August 15 and was produced before the judge. The police had no answer when the judge asked them if they had any warrant. Following the judge’s directives the police let him free on August 16 late evening, said the sources.

Illiyas’ first wife Husna had lodged a dowry harassment complaint against Illiyas and 12 of his relatives in 2005. Her eight relatives attacked Illiyas near his resident in a car and handed him over to the police. His mother, Ameenabi, who came to his rescue,  sustained injuries and died in the hospital later. Illiyas’ brother G Abdur Rahman said that the eight accused are not her grandchildren, but distant relatives of Husna.

When contacted Police Inspector Hanumantharaya said, “The police did not arrest Illiyas at all as there was no warrant. We never detained him illegally. The police only took him to a nearby hospital and got treatment for injuries. Allegations regarding arrest and keeping him behind bars are baseless.”
