Incessant rain through Sunday night in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts brought torrential inflows into the Noyyal, running through the hosiery town. With the river in spate, low-lying areas and dwellings along its course in Tiruppur got marooned. Sources in the town said scores of people sleeping in their homes close to the river course were jolted out of their beds by the fiercely gushing river.

At some places, men, women with children in arms scurrying to safety cut open the red-tiled roofs and clambered on it. Police, fire and rescue services personnel swung into action with the Tiruppur District Superintendent of Police, V Balakrishnan, leading his men in the rescue operations, braving the rains and the poor visibility.
