"The real issue involved is not the treatment meted out to a national celebrity, but a wider question concerning the likely fallout of racial and religious profiling currently followed by some countries," he said.

It was unfortunate that members of the "Muslim community are at the receiving end of such practices," the Minister of State for External Affairs said.

He said the government would voice its concern over the detention of Khan in an appropriate manner and through proper channel.

Tharoor was replying to questions by mediapersons during his visit to the Aligarh Muslim University where he delivered a lecture on India's foregin policy.

Khan was detained for two hours at Newark airport by immigration officials on August 15, sparking an outrage in India.

He was released following the intervention of Indian Consulate officials.
