Devaraj Urs remembered

Addressing the 94th birth anniversary of D Devaraj Urs at Mangalore Taluk Panchayat on Wednesday, he said that Urs started a separate department for development of backward communities and provided 52 per cent reservation for them in education.

He said that the results of various programmes introduced by Urs are now bearing fruits. The programme was presided over by Ramachandra Kumpala. Shriyala G Hegde, Ranganath Shetty among others were present.

Devadiga, who served as a cook in BCM hostel for over 28 years was felicitated during the occasion.

The District Administration, Zilla Panchayath and Backward Class and Minorities Department Udupi jointly organised the 94th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister D Devraj Urs here at Lions Bhavan Brahmagiri on Thursday.

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, DC Hemalatha said education process is not restricted only to the books. The learning should be clubbed with experience to get into the depth of knowledge. Students should develop the habit of analytical thinking among themselves, she said.

Delivering the talk on the occasion, Government Post Graduate 1st Grade College, Thenakneediyur, Kannada Department Professor Dr Neekethan said the late Chief Minister had contributed enormously for the development of the backward class community people. He proposed the notion of secularism in the State. He had the hunger for knowledge and was reflected in his love for books, he added.

In charge ZP President Gerald Fernandes, in charge Taluk Panchayath President Shankar Poojary, Tahsildar Prasanna, Urban Development Authority President B Sudhakar Shetty, Backward Class and Minorities Department District Officer B Girish and others were present.
