According to an eyewitness, the boy Basant Kumar was a student of a private school in Siwan and was on his way to purchase books and stationery from his village Inayat-Chapra. En route, he lost the balance of his two-wheeler when a hen accidentally came in front of the bike and got crushed.

Petrified, he tried to flee from the incident site. But an irate mob chased him and threw stones. One of the stones hit his head which led to his fall from the bike. “The mob then beat him to death,” said his grieving father Ramashankar Manjhi.  The locals gheraoed the police station and demanded punitive action against those involved in the killing.
“Preliminary investigation shows that the villagers took law into their hands, and beat the boy to death,” said Siwan Superintendent of Police Amrit Raj. “A case has been lodged against two persons—Akim Dhobi and Azad Dhobi—on the basis of statement of the victim’s father,” Raj added.
