Ten meet watery grave in 3 incidents

Five Sabarimala devotees from Andhra among dead

Five Ayyappa devotees from Lakshmipuram village, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh drowned in Bhadra river at Hebbale near Kalasa, Chikmagalur district.

Kitti Babu (25), Gopi (29), Gajendra (23), Tyagaraj (30) and Madan (27) were part of the a 23-member group which visited Horanadu on its return from Sabarimala. On their way,
they went to bath in the Bhadra.

According to the police, Babu slipped and fell into the water and the other four who tried to rescue him also drowned. However, another devotee managed to swim back to the bank.

The bodies are yet to be traced and a search team has been pressed into service.

Brothers among victims

In another incident, three students, including two brothers, drowned in Netravati river at Nandavar in Bantwal taluk, Dakshina Kannada district.

Lakshmeesha (19), his brother Jithesh (17) and their relative Yashodhara (19) went to swim in the river along with three others when the incident occurred. “All the three knew swimming. It was Yashodhara who drowned first. The remaining two followed him, in their rescue effort,” said Ranjith, Vinod and Mohan, who had accompanied the trio. The bodies were traced and handed over to the family.

Drowned in rescue effort

The attempt to save a calf from drowning cost two youth their lives in Kalihundi village of HD Kote Taluk, Mysore district.

Ramu (35)  was washed away in the Kabini right bank canal when he jumped into it to  rescue a calf from drowning.  Shivanna (38) met a watery grave when he went to save Ramu. The calf, however, reached the bank safely.
