Mangalore taluk which is the only taluk which comes under CRZ II, has seen several violation cases in the last few years and with every amendment of the CRZ notifications, new violation cases are identified.

Of the 131 cases that have been identified as on August 31, 2011, eviction process has been completed in 30 cases, while 10 cases are pending in the court. If 16 cases are with the Coastal Regulation Zone Management Authority for taking the decision, rest of the cases are pending in various levels for enquiry.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Environment Department Assistant Director Mahesh Kumar U said that 50 acres of government land has been evicted so far and acquired by the district administration in Mangalore taluk during the eviction drive, where as in some of the cases the evicted land belongs to the private owners.

If the year 2005-06 has recorded only one violation case, the year 2010-11 has recorded the maximum number of violation cases with the number reaching 31. Though there has been increase in the number of violation cases when compared to first three years to the last three years, if we consider the average of last three years, there has been a decrease in the violation cases.

From 31 violation cases in the year 2009-10 to 27 cases in the year 2010-11 to 12 cases in the year 2011-12, there has been slight decrease in the number of violation of CRZ rules. Mahesh Kumar said that with the Department and the district administration carrying out awareness programmes for the general public as well as the officers, the violation cases seems to be decreasing slowly.

“With the CRZ-2011 notification issued on November 6, the sensitising programme including the consultation of the public and the PDOs will take place from the next month,” he said.
